The Historical Archive

The Balkan Institute's historical archive contains important material, chiefly relating to the presence and activity of Hellenism in the broad geographical area of Macedonia and the whole of the Balkan Peninsula in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A number of noteworthy studies have either been based on the publication of texts or drawn valuable information from the Institute's archive.

The main body of the archive includes a microfilm collection of official (mainly diplomatic) and private documents, memoirs and reminiscences of fighters and representatives of the Greek communities of Macedonia during the Macedonian Struggle. This material has been recently filed systematically and a comprehensive catalogue is available. There is also a growing collection of foreign diplomatic documents in microfilm on 19th and, primarily, 20th century history of the Balkan states. The photographs section is very well stocked with material relating to the political and social life of the Greeks of Macedonia at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century.
